This is an okay reference book for all the islands. It would be handy if you are visiting more than just one island. However I strongly recommend buying individual guides for each of the islands. Especially, if you are looking to explore the natural features of the islands or find things off the beaten path this guide will fall short. This guide has some nice general information but not the substance regarding natural attractions I have come to expect from travel guides for Hawaii. The voice for this Frommer’s book is rather dull and non-inviting.
I highly recommend Wizard Publications Inc. They are my favorite guide books for Hawaii. I have used both The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed and Maui Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook (Maui Revealed). The voice in the Wizard books show an deep personal knowledge and passion for the islands and it’s culture.

I confess – I didn’t read this whole book. Well, I didn’t start at the front and read all the way to the end at any rate. First, I looked through the pictures and ooh-ed and aah-ed appropriately. Then I started reading some of the things about the various islands. Then I looked up the volcano – Kilauea. Then I turned to the front and read parts of the “Best of Hawaii”. I paged through until I got to Part 4 – Suggested Hawaiian Itineraries – and read that entire chapter closely. It has weekly itineraries for each of the main islands. For every activity it suggests, it gives a page number to go to for more details. And then I played around looking at various chapters that go more in depth on each main island.
This book is presented in a logical manner. There’s some good intro stuff (example: don’t act like the locals aren’t in the US. Hawaii IS United States!) that’s good to know. There’s a bit about time difference (neither Hawaii or Arizona, where I live, practice Daylight Savings – good to know). There’s stuff about safety and driving and something called a “gold card”, which offers discounts – important info there. And then you get to the fun stuff – the beaches, activities, shopping, lodging, culture, FOOD! (I can’t wait to go to a fancy restaurant that proudly serves spam.)
No, I haven’t been to Hawaii (yet!!) in order to make sure that all the information presented is correct. But the more I read, the closer that day gets. In fact, I might have to go a few times ’cause Oahu looks to be at least a week, and Maui is at least a week, and I want to see Kilauea while it’s still going off! I mean, how many other “safe” volcanoes do you know about? (I mean the lava ones, not Yellowstone.)
*sigh* stupid recession. But until my bank account comes back, this book (and the Travel Channel) are a great source of information and imagination. And if those 6 lottery numbers ever come up my way, you can be sure that I’ll be on a flight within a week, the Frommer’s Hawaii guide firmly gripped.
This is a beautiful book laid out in an easy to understand format. Highly recommended, whether you have a vacation planned or not.

We used a 2008 version of this guide for a two week visit to maui and kauai in 2008. The material was useful but difficult to find and somewhat incomplete. we are planning a similar trip for 2010 so we got this updated version. After our trip in December I can better report on this guide’s usefulness. But the 2010 update is worth purchasing while planning a trip.
This new version has page content markers on the headers and footers, as well as a more outline oriented text format. Much easier to find subject and easier to browse. While much of the content is unchanged, a number of recommendations are significantly modified. Graphics are much improved and informative.
Frommer excels at covering the highlights. Their review of restaurants is limited to many of the “usual suspects”. In 2008 the restaurant suggestions were not impressive. We did not find any little authentic local eating spots that are local favorites and deserve to be. The usual suspect restaurants were tourist oriented and unimpressive.
We will be using the Trip Advisor restaurant reviews and rankings more heavily this visit. Their recommendations have served us well for other locations.
The Frommer’s guides cover the basic nuts and bolts of touring in a locality well. To get a better feel for the history and culture as well as LOCAL favorite lodging, eating, and sightseeing and recreation, we find the National Geographic suggested Great Destination Guides to be an excellent supplement to Frommers. As senior citizens we appreciate their accessibility details. Reading the Great Destination guide is like a friend who has lived in the area might tell you from his personal experience. The graphics and photos are sparse, but the text is lively and draws the reader in as a one-on-one conversation might.

Got this book and let my friend borrow it for his Hawaii trip. He said he loved having it as he had never been to Hawaii before and it made his journey much easier than he could ever imagined. He planned out his whole week just from the book and was able to go to places that he may have missed had he gone commando. Definitely a thumbs up.
