When Paul Newman and his daughter, Nell, began looking for the right partner for their coffee enterprise, they found a New England neighbor, Green Mountain Roasters. Their partnership grew and flourished, focused on the common goals of marketing quality coffee while maintaining the environment, supporting sustainable farming, and improving the lives of small coffee farmers. Today, the partnership continues and there are now several Fair Trade Newman’s Own Organic coffees available in K-Cups and as whole beans.

The partnership of Newman’s Own and Green Mountain Roasters is a happy blend of two socially responsible enterprises. Working together, they bring you great coffee while supporting efforts to preserve the environment and improve the lives of coffee farmers.

Green Mountain Coffee purchases a great deal of coffee from Fair Trade Cooperatives and those farmers using organic farming methods to produce the beans. The Farm Identified Program was begun in 1992 and it is the cornerstone of the company’s sourcing efforts. Estates and Cooperatives that produce high quality coffee are identified and often paid a higher price for their beans. This supports their organic methods and helps insure that the beans will meet the high international requirements for Fair Trade Certification. Today, Green Mountain Roasters offers over 45 Fair Trade Certified Organic coffee products. Many are available in K-Cups.

Paul Newman’s various enterprises support sustainable farming, using organic methods, and all of his coffees are Certified Fair Trade Organic. Newman’s Own has donated over $250 million to various organizations around the world. The list of beneficiaries is long and, sometimes surprising, but one that’s become well-known is the Hole InThe Wall Gang, camps for terminally ill children.

Nell’s Breakfast Blend was included in the February 2009 issue of Real Simple magazine’s list of eight “buzz-worthy” coffees “worth waking up for”. This is a blend selected by Nell and is described as “complex with depth”. One innovative agricultural program in a rural area near Oaxaca, Mexico backed by Newman’s Own and Coffee Kids helps women raise chickens to add to the income from their small coffee farms. This project provides them a means to diversify more, increase their household income, while improving their family’s diet with fresh meat and eggs.

The whole beans and ground roasts of Newman’s Own Coffee are packaged in a bag that has been made more environmentally friendly. The outer layer of petroleum based material has been replaced with a new type of packaging film. This as a layer of PLA (poly-lactic) material, a polymer derived entirely from natural cornstarches and is 100% renewable. This reduced the non-renewable portion of each bag 19% by weight.
